چکیده

This test is freely offered for translation and scientific research and aims at the conceptual renewal and at the technical improvement in the topic, through a more operative and objective multi centric approach. The Brief Aphasia Evaluation (BAE) was designed to detect the basic resources of verbal communication in the aphasic patient, so as to begin, after that, with a more complete and better organized neuropsychological or language evaluations. BAE is part of the battery of “Neuropsychological tests abbreviated and adapted to Spanish – speakers” (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15284958?ordinalpos=5&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed _ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum) and has been developed and based on its own objectives, that is, independently of what has been proposed in other aphasia screening tests available in the market. The test must be administered only to people with important linguistic difficulties. 1 By means of this technique, not only is the performance on a series of tasks involving basic abilities for verbal communication explored but the patient is also cognitively stimulated. This proposal does not intend to replace the theoretical and technical perspective of the professional involved, but simply to complement it.

Non-verbal semantic impairment in semantic dementia.

The clinical presentation of patients with semantic dementia is dominated by anomia and poor verbal comprehension. Although a number of researchers have argued that these patients have impaired comprehension of non-verbal as well as verbal stimuli, the evidence for semantic deterioration is mainly derived from tasks that include some form of verbal input or output. Few studies have investigated...

Determining the Association between Language and Cognitive Tests in Poststroke Aphasia

BACKGROUND Individuals with aphasia are often excluded from studies exploring poststroke cognition because so many of the standard cognitive assessments rely on language ability. Our primary objective was to examine the association between performance on cognitive tests and performance on comprehension and naming tests in poststroke aphasia. Second, we aimed to determine the association between...

Semantic fluency in aphasia: clustering and switching in the course of 1 minute.

BACKGROUND Verbal fluency tasks are included in a broad range of aphasia assessments. It is well documented that people with aphasia (PWA) produce fewer items in these tasks. Successful performance on verbal fluency relies on the integrity of both linguistic and executive control abilities. It remains unclear if limited output in aphasia is solely due to their lexical retrieval difficulties or ...

Verbal and non-verbal semantic impairment: From fluent primary progressive aphasia to semantic dementia

Selective disturbances of semantic memory have attracted the interest of many investigators and the question of the existence of single or multiple semantic systems remains a very controversial theme in the literature. Objectives To discuss the question of multiple semantic systems based on a longitudinal study of a patient who presented semantic dementia from fluent primary progressive aphas...

Cognitive deficits in post-stroke aphasia.

The assessment of aphasics' cognitive performance is challenging and such patients are generally excluded from studies that describe cognitive deficits after stroke. We evaluated aphasics' performance in cognitive tasks compared to non-aphasic subjects. A sample of 47 patients (21 aphasics, 17 non-aphasics with left hemisphere lesions and 9 non-aphasics with right hemisphere lesions) performed ...
